Household Bills
Priority and Non-Priority Bills
Budgeting can really help you to manage your money effectively – helping to keep track of your incoming & outgoing money each week, fortnight or month. Write down your income and the cost of each of your priority bills, so you can see what is left to be divided between your non-priority bills and other expenses. See below for further information on priority and non-priority bills.

It is important to pay the bills classed as ‘priority’ first as they are the bills that can have more serious consequences if not paid. This can include having essential services withdrawn or being summoned to court. Contact Cash Wise if you are worried about any of your priority bills.
These are your priority bills:
- Council tax
- Rent/mortgage.
- Child maintenance
- Court ordered payments.
- Gas and electric (energy)
- TV licence
- Money owed to HMRC/DWP
Non-Priority Bills
Non-priority bills can still feel like a personal priority; however, such bills are considered as non-priority as they are less likely to cause serious consequences if not paid. Where you can, cancel subscriptions and shop around for deals to reduce outgoings and minimise debt accumulation. It is vital you still pay as much as you can towards non-priority bills as they can still become debts and may cause you financial issues in the future.
These are the bills classed as 'non-priority';
- Phone Bill
- Broadband
- Loans from family/friends
- Overdraft
- Personal loan
- Bank loans
- Credit card
- Store card/ Catalogue debt
- Subscriptions: i.e., Netflix.
- Water
