Cottage Pie

This classic, hearty meal is a great comfort food, especially great on a cold, winter’s day! The mince mix is also great to make in bulk and freeze for future meals.

Ingredients

  • 500g potatoes,
  • 1 onion,
  • 150g peas,
  • 160g carrots,
  • 5 tablespoons/ 65g gravy granules,
  • 500g mince,
  • 100g cheese.

Method

  1. Firstly, add a large pan of water on to boil and preheat the oven to 180 degrees/ gas mark 4.
  2. Peel and chop 500g potatoes into quarters and boil for 15-20 minutes, or until tender and cooked.
  3. Whilst the potatoes are cooking, roughly chop an onion and 160g carrots and add these to a frying pan on a medium heat, with a small amount of oil.
  4. Break up 500g mince into the pan, mix occasionally until it is browned.
  5. Season to your preference. Suggestions are mixed herbs, salt, and pepper.
  6. Boil the kettle, then mix 4 and a half tablespoons of gravy with 500ml boiling water.
  7. Add 150g of peas and the gravy mix to the mince.
  8. On a low heat, let this simmer for 5 minutes whilst the potatoes are cooking.
  9. Once the potatoes are cooked, mash them until smooth. To make them creamy, add a splash of milk and/or butter.
  10. Add the cooked mince mix to a casserole dish and place the mashed potatoes on the top.
  11. Cook this in the oven for 20 minutes.
  12. Grate 100g cheese and sprinkle this on top of the potato.
  13. Cook for a further 5 minutes, or until golden.
  14. Now, plate up and enjoy!
